Continuing from yesterday's debacle Veeam Backup of DC-01 Failed. With DC-01's failure I've migrated FSMO roles from DC-01 to DC-02 and then started working on bringing DC-03 online but brought all my virtual machines on HV-03 to a dead stop.

I was confused and distracted yesterday and forgot to save some of my notes. The problem ended up being that my Windows Server 2022 test ISO had not been assigned any permissions for domain users or groups. Once I was able to shut down DC-03 and unmount the ISO the other virtual machines began performing as expected. Then once I added permissions to the ISO to allow domain/administrators access it started working like a charm and I was able to boot DC-03 and install the operating system.

So I start by setting DC-03's network data.

  • IP Address: 10.10.10.XXX
  • Netmask: 255.255.255.0
  • Gateway: 10.10.10.XXX
  • DNS1: DC-02
  • DNS2: 127.0.0.1

I then change the hostname to DC-03 and reboot. Once it comes back online I start up the first round of Windows Updates. They download pretty quickly so I start the installation and reboot. I come back ten minutes later but I can't even open a console to DC-03. I decide to wait a little longer and come back in another 8 minutes. I can now get a console window to open and it shows updates are 38% complete. Later the updates finally complete and I start a second round of updates. While waiting for this round of updates to finish I change the server's time zone to my time zone.

I come back after lunch and the second round of updates has completed. I queue up a third round of updates. This round completes quickly and does not require a reboot so I am finally done with updates. I connect the server to the domain and reboot. I add the Active Directory Domain Services role along with DNS and DHCP and then reboot. I configure DNS. Before I can configure DHCP I run out of time for the day and will have to start tomorrow with configuring DHCP.
